Changelog — what's new in Groupset

Who this is for: everyone Applies to: all

What this page covers

This page is the plain-language story of Groupset, newest first. It lists the changes that affect how the app works for team admins, coaches, athletes, and parents — not the behind-the-scenes work. Exact dates come from the project's history, and most features rolled out gradually over a few weeks, so read each month as "around this time." The list below runs through early October 2026.

Early October 2026 — The Group tab, photo fixes, training-load checks

  • The Team tab is now the Group tab (coaches). The bottom tab that holds your coaching home base — Next Practice, Athletes, Coach actions, Celebrations, and Volunteers — is labelled Group instead of Team, so it reads as your training group rather than the whole team. The earlier entries below still say "Team tab" because that is what it was called then. See Your first look around.
  • Parents get a simpler bottom bar (parents). If you are a parent and not an athlete yourself, the bottom bar is now Home, Events, Chat, Family — the Activities tab is no longer shown. Your own rides and activities are still there: open the navigation menu and choose My Activities. See Your first look around.
  • The "View roster" shortcut is gone from the Group tab (coaches). The shortcut at the bottom of the Group tab's Athletes section was removed. The full roster is still available from the navigation menu. See Roster.
  • Profile photo fixes (everyone). Taking a photo and cropping it on an iPhone no longer hangs. On the web, choosing Take Photo in the full-screen photo view opens your photo library instead of a camera view that could get stuck. If an upload fails, the app explains what went wrong in plain language and offers a retry, and coaches and athletes who hit an upload error can upload again. See Profile and account and Roster.
  • Performance links go straight to a rider's time-trial efforts (coaches). On the performance dashboard, tapping a climb or descend time on the Group Skills card opens that rider's page at their Time Trial Efforts, and tapping a dot on a segment chart opens that rider's efforts for that segment. The Time Trial Efforts panel now carries a caption explaining that it always shows season bests while the Group Skills card uses the reporting window you picked. See Performance analytics.
  • Training-load checks now flag only genuine spikes (coaches). The weekly report's load check compares a rider's last seven days with their own recent normal weeks and only raises a flag when the week is a real jump above their usual riding — with safeguards so a rider coming back from a break is not flagged just for resuming. This is the guarded weekly-spike check promised in the September notes; it is being rolled out. See Coach insights.
  • Attendance follow-ups can exempt younger grades (coaches). If your team marks certain grades as not required to attend (for example grades 7–8 after their race season), those riders no longer generate "reach out" attendance actions in coach insights. They still appear in attendance reports and the streak heat map. See Attendance and Coach insights.
  • Race results stay fresh after the race (everyone). Once a race's live window ends, the Results tab now refreshes on its own every couple of minutes, so late corrections and the official results appear without a manual refresh. If a refresh fails, the last good results stay on screen behind a "Results may be outdated" note you can tap to retry. See Race results.

End of September 2026 — Volunteer deadlines, self-based training checks

  • The Team tab's duplicate attention alert is gone (coaches). The insights alert at the bottom of the Team tab repeated a notice you'd already scrolled past. The alert still appears on your home screen when a group needs attention, and the red dot on the Team tab stays. The Coach actions card now has an Open report link in its header, and opening the report — from there, the home card, or the navigation — clears that group's red dot for the week. See Coach insights.
  • Volunteer items can have a "needed by" time. When a team admin asks families to bring things (snacks, gels, course supplies), they can now add an optional deadline to the item — for example "needed by Saturday 8:30 AM." Families see the deadline on the signup card and on the volunteering card in the feed, and reminders are timed against it instead of just the event start. If the event moves, the deadline moves with it automatically and everyone is told the new time. See Volunteering.
  • Volunteering gets a faster shift builder (team admins). Adding rows is quicker: an always-visible "Add row" control stays reachable at the top and bottom of the list, new rows appear on screen as you add them, and item rows now use clearer labels — Item (for example "cookies"), Quantity, and Unit — instead of generic field names. Starting from an empty builder shows an "Add first shift" button with hints.
  • Training-load checks now compare riders with themselves (coaches). When the weekly report flags a rider whose training is ramping up, it now measures against that rider's own recent typical level ("Riding 30% above their own last 28 days"), with the group comparison shown as extra context rather than the main yardstick. This makes the check fairer for riders whose normal volume differs from the group's, and milestone celebrations are now found reliably, so every celebration row can be cheered with a high five. See Coach insights. Superseded 2026-09-30: the check is now a guarded weekly-spike comparison against the rider's own history (ships with the next release) — see the updated Coach insights guide.
  • Attendance streaks now count practices that already happened. Previously, a streak could show as zero whenever the team had practices still upcoming on the schedule; streaks, practice counts, and attendance rates in coach reports now look only at past practices. See Attendance.
  • Member pages have a consistent layout. A member's page now shows the same set of tabs in the same order whether a coach or a parent opens it, and the profile tab includes the family connections — the linked parents or guardians for an athlete. Tapping a circle in the attendance streak heat map lands straight on that rider's performance information.

Late September 2026 — Coach petitions, profile photos

  • Parents can now ask to become a coach. From your profile, you can submit a coaching request for your team: you state your NICA license level and when it expires, and optionally add a note and the training group you'd like to coach. Team admins review these requests in the same review queue that handles group-move requests and incident reports — they now get their own tab there — verify the license themselves, and either approve the request, choosing the training group the new coach will lead, or decline it with a reason. You can withdraw a pending request, and your profile always shows where your request stands. Admins get a heads-up when a request arrives, and the queue also lists coaches who aren't assigned to any training group yet so nobody gets lost. See Becoming a coach.
  • Profile photos get a full-screen view. Tapping a person's photo on a member page now opens it full-screen. From there — depending on your role — you can take a photo with the camera or choose one from your library, crop it to a circle before saving, and watch the upload finish, with a retry button if it doesn't go through the first time. Team admins and parents can remove a photo; coaches can replace one but not remove it. Your own profile photo is still changed from the profile screen. See Profile and account.
  • Attendance streak heat map (coaches). The coach insights report now includes a heat map with one circle per athlete — the darker the circle, the longer that athlete's current attendance streak, with no streak shown as a neutral circle rather than a warning. Tap a circle to open the athlete's member page. See Coach insights.
  • Team owners now have full admin powers everywhere. The app has always described "owner" as the same level of control as "team admin," but a few admin actions — notably some payment-management steps — didn't actually work for owner accounts. That's fixed: owners and admins now have exactly the same abilities. See Roles and permissions.
  • The app icon's unread badge now updates in the background. The unread count on the app icon used to wait until you opened the app; it now refreshes as notifications arrive, even when Groupset is running in the background.

September 2026 — Coach insights, volunteering

  • The performance dashboard is open to every assigned coach, whatever their NICA license level — Level 1 coaches see the same groups' data as higher-level coaches. (Viewing athlete medical information still needs Level 2 or higher.)
  • The dashboard became a three-card stack — Group Volume, Group Skills, and Segment Performance — with the reporting window and group picker pinned above the cards. Group Volume and Group Skills compare each rider to the group median in plain gap percentages ("+25%", with "well below / about average / well above" chips) instead of percentile tiers; the segment card keeps its dot plots and percentiles. See Performance analytics.
  • Coach-insights actions now take you straight to the work: a volume or skill-work action opens the dashboard on the matching card with that rider highlighted, and a celebrate action jumps to the Home feed already filtered to the group with the celebration highlighted.
  • Weekly Actions and Celebrations moved onto the Team tab (Next Practice → Athletes → Coach actions → Celebrations → the insights triage card → Volunteers) as plain, always-open cards; the insights report itself is now the drill-down view. "I handled this" marks an action handled and survives switching tabs. See Coach insights.
  • Coaches now get a "What should I do this week?" list for each training group they coach, prepared automatically each night. Each list suggests up to five actions — for example, reach out to a rider who has missed recent practices, plan for race week, or celebrate a rider's milestone — with a plain-English reason for each one.
  • A full report lets a coach look behind each suggestion at attendance, riding volume, race context, and more.
  • Coaches see a heads-up card on the dashboard when one of their groups needs attention, and receive a push notification at most once a week when there is something new to look at.
  • Volunteering arrives. Team admins can post volunteer opportunities — timed shifts at a race, or one-off tasks — linked to events or standalone; families claim slots, check in and out, and earn credit hours toward milestone badges and the team's season family target. Reminders, automatic check-out, and a family progress card are all included. See Volunteering.

August 2026 — Activity feed, race results, and check-out reporting

  • The home screen now has a What's happening feed: teammates' rides, attendance milestones and streaks, new personal records and season bests, and team announcements. You can switch the feed between your training group, your whole team, or your whole organization.
  • You can cheer on a teammate by reacting to a card — the default reaction is a high five. The person who posted sees who cheered them on, and milestone moments (a long streak, a new record) also alert that rider's parents and coaches.
  • Race day is covered: a race event includes a Results tab showing the full field — every rider in the category, not just your team — with live updates while the race runs, podium highlights, and filters. Parents get a notification as their child records a new lap or moves up in the standings.
  • At check-out, coaches can now flag something for the team admin: request to move a rider between training groups, report an incident or injury, or leave a private note about a rider. Group-move requests and incident reports land in a review queue for the team admin, and parents are told when their rider's group change is completed.

July 2026 — Team chat gets channels

  • Team chat is organized into channels instead of one big conversation. Every team automatically gets a General channel, and channels appear for training groups, roles, and the wider organization as those are created.
  • Conversations stay tidy: you can reply to a single message in a thread, and @-mention a person — or a whole role such as @coaches — when something needs their attention.
  • You can react to messages with emoji and attach photos, files, or videos.
  • Notifications are now set per channel, so you can mute the channels you do not follow. Team admins can also mute an individual member in a channel.

Spring 2026 — Time trials, dashboards, and offline mode

  • Time trials arrive: coaches set up a timed segment on a practice course (for example a climb), riders' attempts are timed so they can compare themselves with teammates, and an athlete's best time is saved as a personal record (PR).
  • Coaches get a performance dashboard with percentile rankings, making it easy to see where each rider stands compared with their training group.
  • The app now works offline. At practice grounds with no signal you can still check riders in and out and see recent information, and everything syncs once you are back online.
  • Around the same time, teams gained a few extras: promo codes for offering discounts on team fees, calendar subscriptions so the team's schedule appears in your phone calendar, and training groups that can span the whole organization rather than a single team.

January 2026 — Payments and Strava

  • Families can pay team fees online with a card. Each athlete's fee and payment status appear in the app, and payment history is kept for reference.
  • Team admins can set the season's fee for the team, and a team can connect a payout account so money from fees is sent to the team.
  • Riders can connect a Strava account and their rides sync into the app automatically, with maps and effort details. Rides show up in My Activities, and the feed and time-trial rankings use them.

Late 2025 — Practices become events; announcements and team chat arrive

  • The schedule is no longer practices-only: practices and races now live together in one Events list, and the app tells the two apart.
  • Practice templates let a team admin set up a standard practice once (location, length, check-in area) and reuse it instead of re-entering everything each time.
  • Announcements arrive: a team admin can broadcast a message to the whole team — handy for schedule changes and reminders.
  • Team chat launches as a single team-wide chat room. (The following summer it was reorganized into channels — see the July 2026 entry above.)

August 2025 — The app launches

  • The app starts with what every team needs: teams and organizations, a roster of athletes/coaches/parents, training groups, and practice attendance — coaches record athletes' check-ins and check-outs at practice and the app keeps the record.
  • Parents can register their athletes through a step-by-step sign-up that gathers athlete details, emergency contacts and medical info, and signed consent forms, then join their team with a passcode.
  • Each athlete's record keeps emergency contacts and consent forms in one place for coaches and admins.

Notes and limits

  • Dates are approximate. They come from the project's history, and most features took several weeks to roll out.
  • The project history records many internal milestones (infrastructure, security, performance work) that are deliberately not listed here because they do not change how the app works for you.
  • Some items are role-specific: coach insights and check-out reporting are for coaches, fees and announcements are for team admins, so not everyone will see every change at once.
  • A few of these features (payments, promo codes, calendar subscriptions) arrived in stages, and their in-app wording may differ slightly from what is described here.
